At All Community Connect, our mission has always been to foster belonging, empowerment, and opportunity for everyone. One of our proudest accomplishments so far is the Student Support Group, a lively, safe space created to uplift and connect students from diverse backgrounds in Leeds.
The Journey
The Student Support Group was formed in response to the growing needs of both international and local students as they adjust to life in a new environment. With many students confronting issues from loneliness to academic stress and financial difficulties, the group was created in response to a simple yet impactful question: “How can we support our students better?”
Under Brother Innocent Igiehon's leadership, Director of All Community Connect, the idea swiftly developed into a vibrant support system that has continued to expand and positively influence lives.
A Space for Growth and Connection
The group meets biweekly on Saturdays, bringing students together in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Each session typically features a guest speaker (or two), accomplished professionals and community leaders who generously share their insights, experiences, and encouragement.
From the Lord Mayor of Leeds to local councillors (including from Moortown), a mental health practitioner, and even the President of the Nigerian Community in Leeds, our guests have inspired students with their stories and practical guidance. Their presence not only educates but also affirms students’ value in the wider community.
After the talks, students enjoy refreshments, engage in open conversations, and leave each session with a food package to take home, a simple but important gesture of care and solidarity.
Achievements and Impact
Since its inception, the Student Support Group has:
- Supported dozens of students in building a local support network
- Sparked mentorship connections and professional guidance
- Helped students access mental health resources and legal advice
- Fostered community integration and belonging
- Received recognition and support from city leaders and institutions
Perhaps most importantly, the group has become a beacon of hope, showing students that they are not alone, that their voices matter, and that community is not just a place, but a people.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the journey so far, we are filled with gratitude for our speakers, our volunteers, and most of all, for the students who show up, speak up, and support one another.
The future is bright, and we remain committed to growing this community, one Saturday at a time.
